I wish everyone a healthy, happy, and prosperous new year!
I adapted quality-driven value investing in managing our family’s stock portfolio since 2009 and as the Quality Value Investing (QVI) newsletter in different iterations since 2016. A book on my learned and unlearned methods, Build Wealth with Common Stocks, was released worldwide beginning in February 2021. The current QVI service was launched on Substack Finance in January 2023.
Although Quality Value Investing has offered diverse products such as newsletter posts, course modules, primary ticker research reports, model portfolios, and holdings reviews by sector, I think, first and foremost, QVI is an educational stock-picking service that achieves alpha by researching only the facts in analyzing a company’s current wealth and a stock price’s present value.
Frankly, QVI has been a tough sell in today’s investor marketplaces, where the cultures have evolved into predominantly growth and income, with a collective thirst for speculative non-dividend paying growth stocks, forward high yield dividend income, real estate investment trusts, business development companies, midstream energy, options trading, commodities, technical analysis, and cryptocurrency. The emphasis seems to be on making money now and not later. History tells us that other than during our full retirement years, such a near-term investing approach is often the fool’s game.
Nevertheless, many investment advisory firms and subscription services make fortunes off the thirst for fast money. What about alpha achievement over the long-term, ala Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger’s concentrated portfolio of quality stocks purchased when the share prices are reasonable, if not in the bargain bin?
As Warren and Charlie have said, when asked why more investors do not follow their winning approach developed over their lifetimes that produced billions in net worth for each, their answers were (paraphrased): ‘Most investors, whether professional or retail, are not interested in making money slowly. They want investment returns now.’
I often challenge my readers to ask their portfolio advisors or investor subscription writers if they have a better run rate from fees collected or from their picks collectively beating the market (achieving alpha) over time?
There is no need to ask me the question separately because I will answer it here:
I make more money from our family's portfolio run rates in capital gains and dividends than I do from the combined net fees collected from Quality Value Investing's paid subscriptions.
(Note: QVI is published on Substack Finance and Seeking Alpha Investing Groups).
If/when my annual recurring subscription fees exceed our family portfolio’s total return run rates, I will cease publication of QVI or remove our family portfolio (mirrored in the Concentrated Real-Time Stock Picks) from the service.
