Lam Research | Current Wealth
Value Proposition
Lam Research is a dividend-paying, large-cap stock in the information technology sector’s semiconductor materials and equipment industry.
Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: LRCX) designs, manufactures, markets, refurbishes, and services semiconductor equipment used globally in integrated circuit fabrication. It supplies wafer-fabrication equipment and related services, mainly for front-end processing that creates active components (transistors, capacitors) and wiring, as well as for back-end wafer-level packaging (WLP) and markets such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Incorporated in 1980, the company is based in Fremont, California, USA.
Economic Moat
Morningstar assigns Lam Research a “wide” economic moat due to intangible assets and switching costs. The company's expertise in semiconductor deposition and etching, stemming from top-tier design capabilities, is deemed sticky by analysts. They also note the high investment needed to stay ahead creates a major barrier for all but the largest chip equipment firms. Morningstar expects Lam to generate returns above its cost of capital for the next 20 years.
QVI’s Value Proposition Elevator Pitch for LRCX:
Lam Research is a well-established player in the semiconductor equipment industry, with high barriers to entry and exceptional opportunities in the thriving AI sector.
Value Proposition Rating
QVI’s competitive advantage rating for Lam Research is Bullish.
Returns on Management
Revenue Growth and Profit Margins
Lam Research’s trailing five-year annualized revenue growth was 12.91%, but lagged behind the S&P 500’s median topline growth of 16.1%. In contrast, the company’s topline grew 26.8% over the most recent 12 months, outperforming the market benchmark’s 14.9%.
The company’s net profit margin was an impressive 30.22%, while its gross margin stood at 49.80%. Its net margin exceeded the S&P 500’s median of 23.2%, driven by a gross margin of 53.9%.
Returns on Equity and Invested Capital
Lam Research’s senior management reported a high return on equity (ROE) of 65.56%, quadrupling QVI’s minimum threshold, but still trailed the S&P 500’s elevated median ROE of 153.4%.
Stock buyback programs often enhance ROE. For instance, as of early 2026, Lam Research (LRCX) maintains an aggressive capital return plan, highlighted by a $10 billion share repurchase authorization initiated in May 2024 and a 10-for-1 stock split. The company repurchased approximately $1.47 billion in shares during the period ending December 28, 2025, demonstrating substantial ongoing efforts to increase shareholder value through active buybacks.
Lam Research’s return on invested capital (ROIC) of 41.89% more than tripled QVI’s minimum threshold and outperformed the broader market’s median ROIC of 24.6%. Additionally, Lam’s ROIC exceeded its 15.7% weighted average cost of capital (WACC), indicating that its senior executives are outstanding at capital allocation, despite higher-than-average capital costs.
QVI’s Owners’ Earnings
In a further test of management effectiveness, the five-year trailing current wealth of owners’ earnings for Lam Research, or EPS growth plus dividend rate growth annualized, was 37.54%, an outstanding rate of return for shareholders.
When substituting free cash flow growth for EPS growth, owners’ earnings jump to a stellar 50.97%.
Return on Management Rating
QVI’s business fundamentals rating for Lam Research is Bullish.
Enterprise Downside Risks
Long- and Short-Term Debt Coverages
As reported in its fiscal Q2 2026 financial statements ending December 28, 2025, Lam Research’s long-term debt coverage was 3.76 times, triple QVI’s minimum threshold. Thus, in a crisis, the company could cover its long-term debt three times over using its liquid assets, including cash and short-term investments, accounts receivable (less provision for doubtful accounts), inventory, and prepaid expenses.
In further testing its leverage, the company’s long-term debt-to-equity ratio was 38.76%, indicating that less than half of its shareholders’ equity is needed to cover its long-term debt.
Lam Research’s short-term debt coverage, measured by the current ratio of 2.26, was double QVI’s floor. Thus, its balance sheet indicates that current assets fully cover current liabilities, including accounts payable, accrued expenses, long-term debt service, dividends payable, customer advances, and income taxes payable.
When removing less-liquid inventory from current assets, Lam Research’s quick ratio remains at an unleveraged 1.61.
Enterprise Downside Risk Rating
QVI’s business model risk rating for Lam Research is Low.

Lam Research + LRCX Thesis
Recap of Current Wealth and Present Value
Lam Research is a well-established player in the semiconductor equipment industry, with high barriers to entry and exceptional opportunities in the thriving AI sector.
An analysis of Lam Research’s current financial condition reveals a wide economic moat that supports a resilient business model. Revenue growth is in the double digits, and the net profit margin is over 30%. Returns on equity are high, indicating aggressive share repurchases. Additionally, returns on invested capital surpass the QVI threshold and comfortably cover the company’s capital costs. Its owners’ earnings are extraordinary, whether measured by EPS or free cash flow growth.
Furthermore, Lam Research maintains a well-managed balance sheet, with low leverage of current assets, strong coverage of long-term debt by shareholders’ equity, and sufficient working capital to cover current liabilities. As a result, the company’s downside risks are low. Lam Research earns a bullish current wealth rating due to its historically strong business model.
An analysis of Lam Research’s present value indicates that its average shareholder yields underperform the Ten-Year Treasury benchmark. QVI’s selected valuation multiples imply that shares are priced at a super premium. Share volatility is above average, whereas short interest is under QVI’s ceiling. Notably, LRCX’s relative return has outperformed the market benchmark over 5 and 10 years with considerable alpha. Despite its below-average downside risks, the shareholder yields and valuation multiples warrant a neutral present-value rating at best.
Based on this analysis of Lam Research’s current wealth and LRCX’s present value, Quality Value Investing's actionable view is Neutral. As such, it will not be added to the QVI Stock Picks Real-Time Performance Tracker due to its premium price level, but will remain on the QVI High-Quality Universe Watchlist for its superior business model.
Closing Thoughts
LRCX is a premium-priced stock of a high-quality company that needs a temporary but significant drawdown from a micro-event or a broader stock market correction to price in as a quality-at-value opportunity. Investors with an underweight, low-cost basis might confidently add to their holdings given the stock’s market-beating history and Lam’s burgeoning opportunity in the AI boom.
Catalysts
Potential catalysts that could confirm or contradict QVI’s overall Neutral investment thesis on Lam Research and its common shares include, but are not limited to:
Confirmations (bears say)
Lam’s recent stock rally has outpaced near-term earnings, leaving the stock vulnerable to pullbacks. Valuation multiples are currently sitting at a premium to historical norms.
The company still faces substantial risks from US export controls. Revenue concentration in China is a major concern, with expectations that restrictions could impact sales by approximately $600 million in 2026. Tighter rules could lead to further declines.
Potential gross margin pressure due to a less favorable customer mix, with expectations of a sequential decline in gross margins in early 2026.
Aggressive capacity additions in 2025 could lead to excess inventory, or “channel stuffing,” in which current sales borrow from future demand, creating the risk of a sharp slowdown in new orders in late 2026.
Slower-than-expected spending from major memory and foundry customers could hurt growth. Specific concerns exist regarding capital expenditure cuts by customers such as Intel, as well as potential slowdowns at TSMC or Samsung.
Morningstar has a hold equivalent rating on the stock.
Contradictions (bulls say)
Lam Research is a premier "toll booth" for AI infrastructure expansion, driven by its dominance in etch and deposition for advanced memory (DRAM/NAND) and logic chips.
The company is positioned to capture structural growth as demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and next-generation NAND increases to support AI compute.
Lam has a leading market share in key areas, with strong cash generation supporting robust dividends and buybacks.
The company will benefit from increasing semiconductor complexity and new transistor architectures, such as gate-all-around.
With upward earnings revisions and technical trends, the stock is undervalued relative to its growth, with targets suggesting significant upside.
Charles Schwab has a buy equivalent, and Wall Street sell-side analysts have a consensus buy rating on the stock.
